Youth in Situations of Forced Displacement

Let us discuss solutions to the issues that young refugees encounter.

Hello everyone! my name is Laura, I am a Colombian refugee currently living in Ecuador, I am a communications coordinator for Global Refugee Youth Network, my work and passion is focused on young refugees to be the main agents of change in the issues they believe important, mobilizing resources for projects that they themselves create.

We have been discussing the socio-economic challenges faced by young refugees on this Forum. We now move to solutions…What do you think governments, local communities as well as the international community at large can do to better respond to the needs and aspirations of young people in forced displacement, particularly with regards to their education, skills and employment?

Listen to this video of young people refugees and their aspirations for the future and share your thoughts and ideas on the topic below ⤵️

That thought is still haunting me day after day, with no persuasive answers. Is it conceivable that I began to adapt to the fact that I do not belong in that faraway land? Or am I truly starting to grasp the concept of being a forcibly displaced soul on the outskirts of my homeland? I made every effort to explain those wars and revolutions, those paragraphs and pages, those bombs and bullets, those tears and groans. I looked at the tales of history and the papers of geography. But I did not discover anything that convinced me. I only found a wounded child screaming out for the birth of another injured child, I only found a mother searching for her sons, I only found a daughter fleeing the enemy, followed by the voice of a father asking God to return home. I couldn't discover anything that explained why this thing called war is happening. I couldn't come up with a convincing explanation for this poison known as politics, whose effect appears to circulate, by some means, in our innocent unwitting bodies, our grandparents and children, our safe homes and roads.
Is this the same land in which I was born and from which I also escaped on a dark night for the fear of living there ? Yes, today we are heading east, west, south and north. Our bags are on our shoulders, but our gaze is fixed behind us, on a homeland whose letters spell out my name and the names of all refugees. But we will not head only to seek living; we will also keep heading the journey of finding answers, demonstrating our existence, changing our reality, assisting our society, and establishing a future in which no one will live as we have.

Hi Rahildaris! Nice to meet you and thank you for leading this discussion. I would love to hear yours and other young refugees impressions on the specific challenges faced in accessing education and employment opportunities? Thank you :)

Foni Joyce

Thank you Rahildaris for sharing this question. My name is Foni Joyce am a South Sudanese refugee living in Kenya. I work with the Global Refugee Youth Network. One of the challenges young people particularly unaccompanied minors face is on their protection and navigating life without guidance from family members or parents. In my community I have seen some unaccompanied minors get foster families while others have had to navigate life as child headed household. For most of them once they have turned 18 they age out of programs and cant get further support. This has left them more vulnerable .

I have also seen the power of community and how some members of the community have rallied around unaccompanied minors to provide guidance, advise and financial support where necessary as they work through their own challenges as a displaced community.

📢We are pleased to announce that Terra Renaissance, a Japanese based NGO, has committed to The Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth!
